Lights set around the Shinji-ike pond, the garden's centrepiece, in the pattern of the character for 'heart'. You can walk the autumn colours reflected in the water at an hour when the garden is normally shut.
Normally only part of the garden stays open after 16:30 and it shuts at 18:00 from October to March; during the event it stays open until 20:00. There was a lighting-up ceremony at 17:00 on the first night in 2025. It is next to the Kokugikan, an easy stop before dinner in Ryogoku.
About the garden
Behind the sumo arena, free. The pond was once tidal from the Sumida River; today pumps recreate the rise and fall. Fits neatly before or after a sumo tournament.
Where to stand
The 'horse-stopping stone' in the pond, with Skytree on the far bank. An Edo lord's garden with a 21st-century tower.
Practical notes
Free and next to the Kokugikan sumo arena and the Sumida Hokusai Museum. Open late in summer. Small; 20 minutes is enough.

A bistro one floor up in a riverside hotel on the Sumida, just south of the garden, with terrace seats; still open until 22:00 when the garden closes at 20:00.

A chicken-broth chanko house open since 1937. In the sumo district, sharing a hotpot here after the lit garden is about as Ryogoku as an evening gets.
