Koka, the Important Cultural Property tea house of the Asaka residence. Visitors normally stop at the earthen-floor bench seating; today you go up into the tatami room for tea.
Ages 13 and up; no bare feet, bare shoulders or knees. Low chairs available if you cannot kneel. Held rain or shine. Applications close 27 Sep.
Autumn evening openings

- Eight evenings (6, 13, 20, 21, 27, 28 Nov; 4, 5 Dec) until 20:00, last entry 30 minutes before. Some paths in the Japanese garden close at 18:00.
- Admission
- The Marimekko exhibition ticket (¥1,400, timed entry) includes the garden. After 17:00, students free and adults/65+ at group rates (ID required).
- Booking
- Booking advisedTimed-entry booking for the exhibition; evening slots (17:00–20:00) can be bought online in advance, with a limited number of same-day tickets at the main-gate box office. Garden-only tickets need no booking; buy them at the box office.
The former Prince Asaka residence's grounds, normally shut at 18:00, stay open until 20:00: a rare chance to walk the lawn and the Japanese garden after dark.
The Western garden is closed for works until March 2027, and on 27–28 Nov the lawn hosts an outdoor Noh performance (afternoon, separate ticket).
About the garden
An Art Deco prince's mansion with three gardens: Japanese, Western, and lawn. The ¥200 garden-only ticket is enough. A date with room to breathe, walking distance from Meguro.
Where to stand
From the tea house Koka in the Japanese garden, look across the pond to the mansion's windows: the 1930s marriage of Japanese and Western, seen from the garden side.

Garden-only ticket ¥200 (closed Mondays). Next to the National Institute for Nature Study, a 20-hectare forest, and 8 minutes from Happo-en.
