About the garden
A stroll garden in Umekoji Park, about 15 minutes' walk west of Kyoto Station, made to mark 1,200 years since Kyoto became the capital. Its pond is a 'water mirror': one centimetre of water over black granite that reflects the sky and the trees. During the autumn maple festival it opens after dark too, and the lit leaves appear in that surface.
Where to stand
Stand at the edge of the water mirror, then crouch so your eyes are close to the surface: with only a centimetre of water, the lower you look from, the stronger the reflection. Find together where the real trees end and their reflections begin. Then walk the loop past the waterfall, which drops about six metres, and follow the nosuji, thin streams that run from above the falls through the rolling lawn. At night, watch how the lit maples and the dark sky trade places in the water.
Practical notes
Umekoji Park is about 15 minutes' walk west of Kyoto Station, or right by JR Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station on the Sagano Line. The Suzaku garden is a paid area inside the park (¥200 by day, which also covers the Inochi-no-Mori biotope; closed Mondays). During the 2026 maple festival (Nov 13–29, closed Nov 16 and 24) it is open 17:00–21:00 with last entry at 20:30, for ¥600; a same-day stub from the Kyoto Aquarium or the Kyoto Railway Museum in the same park takes ¥100 off.
