The lower precinct lit up: Benten-do and its pond, the Kondo and the pagoda. Full changeover from daytime visitors. The Sanbo-in garden is not included
Tickets are sold at the Sanbo-in reception (per the 2024 notice). Benten-do is at the very back, so arriving near last entry leaves little time at the pond; go in during the 18:00 hour and head straight to the back.
About the garden
Walk to the very back of Daigo-ji's lower precinct and a vermilion hall to the goddess Benzaiten appears beside a pond. The hall, the pond and the Kannon Hall nearby were laid out in 1930 for the thousandth memorial of Emperor Daigo. In autumn the red of the hall and the maples meet in the water, and during the night viewing they are lit.
Where to stand
Enter the Garan, pass the Kondo and the pagoda, and keep walking. Near the Kannon Hall the pond opens out and the vermilion Benten-do comes into view. Circle the water slowly and stop where the hall and the maples are reflected together; a few steps either way changes the shape of the hall in the water. The hall enshrines Benzaiten, goddess of music and learning.
Practical notes
Benten-do is at the far end of the lower precinct (Garan), which needs its own ¥600 ticket or a combined ticket with Sanbo-in and the museum. The autumn night viewing covers the Garan only; in 2025 it ran 22 Nov–7 Dec, 18:00–20:50 (last entry 20:10), for ¥1,300, with a full changeover from daytime visitors. Allow about 18 minutes on foot from Daigo Station on the Tozai subway line.

A griddle izakaya with counter and tatami seating, two minutes from Daigo Station. Non-smoking and open until 22:30, right on the way back to the station after the night viewing, though it is a fair walk from the back of the precinct.

Creative seasonal Japanese cooking three minutes from Daigo Station, open until midnight with private rooms and sunken tables; useful on Thursdays when Kuukai is closed. Has both smoking and non-smoking seats.

A cafe in the grounds of Daigo-ji's treasure museum, with a terrace. One of the few places to sit down without leaving the temple after walking to the back of the precinct.
