The Karamon gate, once used only by high-ranking guests, opens this one day a year so you can enter by the Edo-period route. The Edo-era Tokujin-do hall is also shown (viewed from outside). Volunteer guides, cancelled in rain.
The same gate is lit during the night opening from 13 Nov; walk through it by day now and come back to see it lit. There is a one-day commemorative stamp.

Lighting on the lone pine, Horai island, the Karamon gate and the snow-support ropes, plus projection mapping on the earthen wall and the Engetsu-kyo moon bridge. The Kantokutei tea house opens in the evening for the first time.
Enter by the west gate. See Horai island and the lone pine across the big pond first, then head for the moon bridge at the far end; arriving near the 20:00 last entry leaves little time for it.
About the garden
Next to Tokyo Dome, the oldest daimyo garden in Tokyo. It miniaturises famous landscapes: China's West Lake, Kyoto's Arashiyama. The tea house Kantokutei serves lunch.
Where to stand
Look across the big pond to the Horai island with the white roof of Tokyo Dome rising behind it. Edo and the present in one frame; a very Tokyo borrowed view.
Practical notes
Enter from the west gate near Iidabashi. Quieter than Rikugien and larger than it looks; allow 90 minutes. Kantokutei inside serves a proper lunch.

Next to the west gate, on the ground floor of the Japan-China Friendship Center. After a garden that copies Chinese scenery, Chinese tea makes the connection.
