About the garden
A temple behind a quiet residential gate north of Nanzen-ji, normally closed to visitors. Its pond garden is by Ogawa Jihei VII, the designer behind many of Kyoto's modern gardens: water drawn from the Lake Biwa Canal, with the Higashiyama hills behind. This autumn it opens for nine days, together with treasures linked to Empress Tofukumon-in.
Where to stand
In an Ueji garden, watch the water. First find where the canal water enters the pond, then follow it with your eyes to where it leaves. It is a stroll garden, so compare the view from the near and far sides of the pond and see how the Higashiyama ridge lines up differently behind it. Do not miss the agate water basin in the corner, said to have come from Korea.
Practical notes
Koun-ji is normally closed and opens only for the Kyoto Non-public Cultural Properties programme (Nov 28–Dec 6, 2026; ¥1,000, no booking). Check the short days: last entry at noon on Nov 30 and Dec 2, and 15:30 on Dec 3. Murin-an, another Ogawa Jihei garden fed by the same canal, is a short walk south, so the two pair naturally.
