From Nov 10 to 20, Hokyo-ji's doll exhibition is open about six minutes' walk away, so you can see both gardens in one morning. The evening session (from Nov 21) is a separate time slot

Entry closes at 19:30 and the evening ends at 20:00, so go in during the 18:00 hour. Day (10:00–15:30) and evening sessions are separate; the temple closes 15:30–18:00 for the changeover. A hand-made soba shop a short walk north up Shinmachi-dori is a warm stop on the way back.
About the garden
A head temple of the Nichiren school, known as one of Oda Nobunaga's lodgings in Kyoto. Its main hall and the moss garden in front of it, Hoshi-en, open only for spring and autumn viewings. In autumn there is also an evening maple illumination from late November.
Where to stand
In the main hall, sit first and look straight out at Hoshi-en. Count the maple trunks standing in the moss and how they are spaced, and see how far the moss runs between them. The name is written 'the form of the Dharma'. At the evening session, look again for which of the trees you counted by day are now lit. On the way out, look up at the great gate, said to have been moved here from Hideyoshi's Jurakudai palace.
Practical notes
Myokaku-ji opens its main hall and garden only in spring and autumn. In 2026 the day viewing runs Nov 10–Dec 6 (10:00–15:30, last entry 15:00) and the evening illumination Nov 21–Dec 6 (18:00–20:00, last entry 19:30); both ¥800, free for primary-school age and under. From Nov 10 to 20 you can pair it with Hokyo-ji's doll exhibition, about six minutes' walk away.

A 14-seat soba shop on the same street as Myokaku-ji, grinding its buckwheat in a stone mill and cutting noodles by hand. It is open to 21:30, so a warm bowl works after the evening viewing ends at 20:00. About nine minutes' walk from Hokyo-ji.

A ten-seat tea room run by the Kyoto confectioner Tawaraya Yoshitomi, a short walk east of Hokyo-ji along Teranouchi-dori. Share something warm and sweet after the dolls; no reservations, so you may wait briefly for a seat. About six minutes from Myokaku-ji.
