After the gates close, a group of up to 20 sees all 92 panels of Hosokawa Morihiro's Cloud Dragon paintings in the main hall (hojo) and the rock garden with no one else there. The tour, led by temple staff, also takes in the normally closed Buddha hall, the Zorokuan tea room and a display of temple treasures including Hosokawa's own work
The organisers bill it as the rock garden 'as dusk closes in', and the 18:30 finish is after sunset on every date. No children of primary-school age or younger, no wheelchairs, Japanese-language guiding only, and goshuin are pre-written. Wait for check-in at Yamanekoken across the road; for dinner, walk east towards Ritsumeikan University, where places stay open past 21:00
About the garden
Fifteen stones on white gravel, laid out so that you can never see all of them at once from the veranda. The garden changes with where you sit; try two different spots.
Where to stand
The classic viewpoint is about one third along the veranda from the left. Note the earthen wall: it is slightly lower at the far end, a trick that makes the garden feel deeper.
Practical notes
Arrive at 8:00 sharp; by 10:00 the veranda is shoulder to shoulder. Photography is allowed, but there is no seating besides the veranda. Kyoyochi pond on the way out is often empty.

A bright half-basement cafe just across Kinukake-no-michi from the temple gate, sharing its name with the restaurant in a Miyazawa Kenji story. Somewhere to spend the time before the 15:40 check-in for the after-hours tour, over waffles and coffee.

A canteen near Ritsumeikan's Kinugasa campus, used by students and neighbours. Chicken-cutlet and minced-meat-cutlet set meals come in under ¥1,000, and it stays open until 21:00, so dinner still works if you walk east along Kinukake-no-michi after the 18:30 finish.

A chicken-focused izakaya right by the Ritsumeikan-daigaku-mae bus stop. It is open until 23:00, rarely closes, and has 80 seats, so walking in as a pair after a weekend tour is easy.
