A curator-led walk through the normally closed library building and the grounds. Meet at the fountain inside the estate.
The ticket includes the Marunouchi exhibition, so plan that visit too. The Okamoto grounds are hilly; wear good shoes.
About the garden
The wooded estate where the Iwasaki family of Mitsubishi built a library and a mausoleum on the Kokubunji escarpment. The art museum moved to Marunouchi in 2022; the grounds stay open on weekdays only, nearly empty. You see Josiah Conder's mausoleum and the 1924 library from outside, then the trees.
Where to stand
Climb to the library and look at its scratch-tile facade, then walk on to the mausoleum. Stand square to its front: Conder designed it for silence, and it still works. On the way down, the path follows the escarpment through the old Musashino woodland.
Practical notes
Weekdays only, 9:30 to 16:30, and free; the gate is shut on weekends and holidays. The library interior is not open, and the museum collection is now in Marunouchi. Seven minutes from Kaminoge Station, and the Gotoh Museum garden is on the way.
