The whole precinct is lit. You walk through the halls and the pond garden past lit maples, the protected giant camphor trees and a bamboo grove
Day and night are separate admissions. The illumination resumed in 2025 after five years. Night viewing at the Shogunzuka Seiryuden hilltop hall is listed as undecided. Sources differ on the start date (Nov 7 on the city tourism site, Nov 6 on JR Central's Souda Kyoto), and the temple had not posted autumn dates as of Sep 23, so check its site before going
About the garden
An imperial temple with a pond garden attributed to the painter Soami, viewed from the study veranda. The enormous camphor trees at the gate are among the largest in Kyoto.
Where to stand
From the Kachoden hall, the stone in the centre of the pond is the dragon's back. Walk up past the tea house Kobuntei and the same pond is seen from above.
Practical notes
Near Chion-in and Nanzen-ji but far less visited. Autumn evening openings light the moss garden blue; the effect is theatrical rather than traditional.

A bistro and wine bar in a small house about three minutes from Higashiyama Station. It stays open until midnight, so dinner still works after Shoren-in closes at 22:00.

A small counter-seat bar run by a couple. Their signature pork-miso soup and Niigata sake will warm you up late into the night after an evening viewing, and it is open on Mondays when En is closed.
