The pond garden on the site of the regent Fujiwara no Kanezane's villa, a Kyoto City Place of Scenic Beauty, with maples, moss and red senryo berries. The grounds also hold the memorial inscribed by Saigo Takamori
Right next to Ryogin-an and usually open the same weeks, so see both. Dates confirmed on the Kyoto city tourism site; the temple's own site could not be reached on 23 Sep.
About the garden
Founded in 1387 by the Shimazu lords of Satsuma, this sub-temple stands where the regent Fujiwara no Kanezane kept his villa, Tsukinowa-dono, at the end of the twelfth century. The pond, which turns a sharp corner halfway along, preserves the plan of a courtier's garden. Saigo Takamori is said to have plotted the shogunate's fall here.
Where to stand
Once you step down into the garden, stop at the water's edge. The pond turns a right angle halfway along, and the whole outline is said to trace the character for 'heart'. Walk the bank and look for the spot where the pond reads as one shape; imagine the villa that once faced it, and you can work out where its front must have been. Within the grounds stands the memorial Saigo Takamori inscribed in 1869 for those killed at Toba-Fushimi.
Practical notes
Open only around Golden Week and for about a month from early November; ¥300. It sits at the far southeast corner of the Tofuku-ji complex, about 12 minutes from Tofukuji Station, and makes a natural pair with Ryogin-an next door. The temple's own website was unreachable when we checked, so the 2026 dates come from the Kyoto city tourism site.

An old house two minutes from Tofukuji Station where you take your shoes off at the door. It opens at 7:00, so you can have breakfast here before the sub-temples open.
