There is no changeover when the lights come on (city tourism site), so enter around 15:30 and watch the switch from daylight to lighting on one ticket. Matcha ends at 16:30 or when it runs out. Occasionally closed for ceremonies. Dates are from the Kyoto city tourism site; the temple had not posted autumn 2026 details by 23 Sep.
About the garden
A Tofuku-ji sub-temple best known for its early-summer bellflowers. In its moss-covered Momoyama dry garden, clipped azaleas and natural stones break the surface, and a bell-shaped window in the study frames one corner. During the autumn viewing the lights come on late in the afternoon, so you can stay on from day into night.
Where to stand
Sit on the tatami of the main hall first and take in the whole garden: clipped azaleas and natural stones surfacing here and there from the moss. Then move to the bell-shaped window, whose curved frame turns one corner of the garden into a single picture. When the lights come on around 16:00 the moss sinks into darkness and the maples and clipped shapes step forward. Sit at the same window twice, once in daylight and once after dark.
Practical notes
Tentoku-in is normally closed and opens only for the bellflower season in early summer and the autumn viewing (14 Nov–6 Dec in 2026, 9:00–20:00, lights from about 16:00). Matcha is served until 16:30 or until it runs out. It is seven minutes from Tofukuji Station and close to Ikka-in, which opens on autumn weekends.
