The gardens seen through the Lotus Room's four panes (camellia, lantern, maple, pine) and the round Window of Enlightenment, lit after dark. The only evening opening of the year, four days
Lights on only 20–23 November. Unryu-in is at the back of Sennyu-ji, about 20 minutes uphill from Tofukuji Station; it is downhill afterwards to places for dinner at the foot of Sennyuji-michi. Dates from the Kyoto city tourism site; not yet on the temple's own site as of 23 Sep.
About the garden
At the far end of the study hall, a round 'window of enlightenment' and a square 'window of delusion' open onto the garden; this is a temple where windows do the framing. In the Lotus Room before it, a cushion marks the one spot where the four panes of a shoji screen each hold a camellia, a lantern, a maple and a pine. It is a chain of small gardens you take turns sitting in front of.
Where to stand
Halfway round, sit on the cushion in the Lotus Room; standing, the four panes will not line up with their four views. Next order matcha in the Dairin room and look out from the low chairs. Finally the Satori room: sit on the tatami square facing the round window, look through it, then through the square window beside it, and notice how the same garden reads differently. Plum and crab-apple fill the circle in spring, maples in autumn.
Practical notes
Closed every Wednesday except in November, and on several ceremony days, so check the date before the uphill walk. Photography is banned inside the main hall; the windows are in the study hall. Matcha with a sweet is served in a room facing the garden, no booking needed; sutra copying is also offered without reservation.

A second-floor griddle place at the bottom of the Sennyuji-michi slope serving Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. Open until 22:00, so you can walk down after Unryu-in's lights go off at 21:00 (Sundays until 21:00 only).
